Yugoslavia Government Action
The involvement of the Yugoslavia Government was the main reason for the grief the country faced. With Slobodan Milosevic as the President of Yugoslavia, the minorities of the country faced harsh persecution in the forms of concentration camps, the looting of houses, the abuse, rape, and torture of those held captive, and often death. Milosevic lead this persecution, making it a difficult one to stop.
United States Involvement
The United States and other NATO powers played a key role in the ceasing of genocide, along with the breaking up of Yugoslavia. They heavily supported small secessionist movements. The United States also sent 700 troops to maintain peace within the country (3). The United States did not want to involve themselves due to the lack of "vital interests" in the country. Eventually, they did aid the country by helping to supply bombers.
